Alfie

Terms of use

Version 2026-09-19b. Short, and worth reading.

What Alfie is

Alfie is a study aid for law students. It contains reference cards, practice questions and written-answer exercises, together with tools that answer questions and comment on your written work.

It is a supplement to your own study. It is not a course, not a substitute for your lectures, readings or tutorials, and not a guarantee of any result in any assessment.

Not affiliated with any university

Alfie is independent. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, authorised by, or connected to the University of Otago or any other university, faculty, department or teaching staff.

Paper codes such as LAWS201 are used only to say which course the material relates to. Using them does not imply any relationship with the institution that runs that course.

Your course materials, your lecturer and your faculty are the authority on what your course covers and how it is assessed. Where Alfie and your course differ, your course is right.

Not legal advice

Nothing in Alfie is legal advice, and using it does not create a lawyer-client relationship of any kind.

The material discusses the law for the purpose of study. It must not be relied on for any actual legal question, your own or anyone else’s. If you need advice about a real matter, speak to a qualified lawyer.

Alfie can be wrong

The AI features run on Claude, made by Anthropic. It has not been trained on your course: it answers from this paper’s material and any documents you put in your notebook, and is meant to flag anything it draws from outside those.

The material is written from one student’s course notes, and parts of it are produced or assisted by artificial intelligence. Both can be mistaken, out of date, or incomplete.

The law changes. A case may be overruled, a statute amended, or a point stated here may simply be wrong. Content is not systematically re-checked against current law.

The AI features in particular can state something confidently and inaccurately. Marking is an opinion generated by software, not a mark, and carries no weight with anyone who actually assesses you.

Check anything that matters against your own materials and your own reading. That instruction is not a formality: it is how this is meant to be used.

What you get when you buy a paper

Buying a paper gives you access to that paper for two months from the date of purchase. It is a single payment. Nothing renews, nothing recurs, and there is nothing to cancel.

Access ends when the two months are up. Papers are sold separately, and buying one gives you no access to any other.

Content may be added, changed or removed while you have access. We try to add rather than remove, but no particular topic, feature or quantity of material is promised.

Use of the AI features is included in that price, with an allowance for the two months and a smaller one for each day. Ordinary revision will not reach either. If you do, the cards, quizzes and practice problems keep working, and the daily allowance starts again at midnight.

Your account

Your account is yours alone. Do not share your login, and do not copy, redistribute or publish the material, whether or not you charge for it.

Anything you upload to your notebook stays yours. We do not claim ownership of it, and it is used only to answer your own questions and comment on your own work.

An account being used by several people, or material being redistributed, may have its access ended without a refund.

Refunds and your consumer rights

If something is broken, if you were charged twice, or if you bought the wrong paper, get in touch and it will be put right.

You have rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 and the Fair Trading Act 1986 that cannot be excluded where you are a consumer. Nothing in these terms limits those rights, and nothing here should be read as trying to.

What these terms do say is that Alfie does not promise a particular grade, does not promise the material is complete or free from error, and is not responsible for a result in an assessment.

Your information

We hold your email address, the name you give, what you have bought, and what you do in the app so it can show you where you were.

Notebook documents are stored so the app can answer from them, and are visible only to you.

Emails are only about your account or about Alfie itself, and every one carries an unsubscribe link. Your details are not sold, and not shared except with the services needed to run the app: Supabase for data, Vercel for hosting, Stripe for payment, Resend for email, and Anthropic for the AI features.

Changes, and the law that applies

These terms may change. If they change in a way that matters, you will be told, and the version you agreed to is recorded against your account.

New Zealand law applies, and the New Zealand courts have jurisdiction.

Something here unclear, or something gone wrong? Ask from inside the app, or reply to any email Alfie has sent you.
